A to Z Challenge – SUPER cross stitch

B is for Batman

IMG_2347_RESIZE_CROP

Batman is from weelittlestitches’ superhero alphabet sampler.

Batman is one of the most visible characters from the DC universe. Rebooted, reimagined, and rebranded many times over on film and television, animated and live-action, some form of Batman has been viewed by practically everyone.

He is a detective. He is a self-proclaimed loner. He is the dark knight. He is vengeance. He is the night. He is Batman!

Batman: The Animated Series and Batman (1989) were my introductions to the pointy eared, caped bedecked bastard (and let’s be honest, Batman is kind of a dick at times).

I am vengeance! I am the night! I am Batman!

The biggest appeal of Batman for me as a kid and as an adult is that he’s a superhero without superpowers – who fosters that in others, such as the first Robin and the first Batgirl.

And let’s be honest, Batman has the best villains! His rogue gallery, seen by many as one of the greatest, include the masked Bane, the thieving Catwoman, the maniacal Joker, and the phobic Scarecrow just to name a few.

He’s been reincarnated several times over on television – including brief appearances on other animated superhero series. He’s even appeared twice on The New Scooby-Doo Movies back in 1972, and I totally admit that I own a DVD copy of those episodes because I’m a fan of the bat and the Scoob!

In The Batman, Bruce Wayne is only three years into his caped crusade against the criminal element of Gotham.

This is a new cape! Don’t push me, man!

Much like Scooby-Doo, Batman has been revamped for cartoons every few years to bring a fresh perspective of a pop culture icon to a new generation.

Batman teams up with other characters from the DC universe in Batman: The Brave and the Bold to combat criminals, solve crimes, and share day in the life activities. Most episodes from The Brave and the Bold were standalone.

Forget this! I’m getting in the Batmobile. I’m OUT!

The best aspect of Batman: The Brave and the Bold was that it had a lighter tone that other animated incarnations of the caped crusader.

He even strutted his mad detective skills on Superman: The Animated Series when he threatened Superman with kryptonite, thwarted a Joker-Luthor team-up, and helped save Metropolis.

Where do you think you are… Gotham?

Batman faces Owlman in Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, defeating him and saving the multiple Earths while sacrificing another speedster instead of the Flash (because he’s the lone Batsy, but he tries his damnedest to keep his people alive). But he certainly did not do all of that unscathed.

You did not just… you did.

B is for Black Widow

Black Widow is from fangirl stitches’ girl power superhero comic book alphabet.

Known as the Black Widow, Natalia Alianova Romanova is a spy, a SUPER spy. You may also know her as Natasha Romanoff or Natalie Rushman – just to name a few aliases.

She’s a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, introduced in Iron Man 2 and portrayed by Scarlett Johansson. She might be the Black Widow that you think of when you see this cross stitch, but when I think about Black Widow – my version is animated!

In the short lived, much beloved animated series The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Black Widow is under suspicion from her fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Hawkeye.

Looking shifty… got something to say about it?

She isn’t a member of the Avengers, but she appears throughout the series infiltrating HYRDA, pissing off Hawkeye, and doing SUPER spy stuff for S.H.I.E.L.D.

Are you going to untie me… or are you going to walk away so I can easily slip out of these ropes? Because I’ve got stuff… things…

Not only does she piss off Hawkeye, she totally macks on the archer! But only after she proves she’s really not HYRDA, asking the Avengers for help in retrieving the Cosmic Cube.

Pose like you’re straight out of noir

I have yet to watch the replacement, Avengers Assemble, where Black Widow is a member of the Avengers team and present for every episode, but it is on my list on Netflix. I plan on watching it soon, thankfully all of the episodes remain on Netflix when newer ones are added (unlike Ultimate Spider-Man).

Batman is my favourite! Even if he is a dick, (who isn’t) I love his super rich brooding self.

Me too! I love the Bats!

Wow! This is supercool! I want to try my hand at this too! My kids love these super-heroes!

You should definitely try your hand at stitching these characters. It is awesome, accomplishing letter after letter – I am leaving the detail work out of the girl power superhero comic alphabet because I prefer to backstitch and french knot at the end of projects – but regardless, it is totally fun.

Again, I love Batman in Justice League unlimited.
Black Widow is probably my favourite female Marvel character.
If you liked the Adam West Batman, I wonder if you ever saw Black Scorpion. It was a 90’s Super Hero TV show which either parodied or mimicked that early Batman series. It was campy, but it was always fun to watch. It’s on DVD but VERY hard to get a hold of. I’ve yet to find a copy, and I’m a collector of TV shows.

Justice League and Justice League Unlimited were awesome! I really need to sit down and rewatch some episodes soon.

I have watched several episodes of the Adam West Batman, but I have never heard of Black Scorpion. And I have seen some episodes of Green Hornet.

Great theme! I really enjoyed reading this, Batman is one of my favourites… Looking forward to reading the rest of your posts 🙂

@LunaNoctis from There She Goes

Okay, this theme is pretty cool, and I love that you’re incorporating your own art into it. I think I love Batman so much because he doesn’t have superpowers but he lives in a world with supervillains. I also love any time he’s referred to first and foremost as a detective because that’s really what he is.

I used to watch the Batman TV show with Adam West as a kid, but I really fell in love with Batman:TAS and then, of course, Justice League.

I never watched The Avengers cartoon, but I do love me some Black Widow.

I know – his lack of superpowers has always been one of the main reasons why I love Batman so much. And he’s always been a detective to me, using his intellect to foil the supervillains and the other non-super criminals of Gotham.
